St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson believes that centre-back Jamie McCart is under-rated, and deserves more credit for the performances he has put in this season.

The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in the Saints side this season, missing only one league game. He has also played a key role in St Johnstone’s run to the Betfred Cup Final.

Davidson reckons that McCart’s performances often go under the radar, and he is a very good defender.

“A very good defender”

“Jamie brings good balance on the left side, but he is a very good defender, first and foremost” he said (The Courier).

“Jamie works extremely hard and is very good on the ball, stepping in and playing. That’s something we have been getting him to do more of this season. But I don’t think people realise how good a defender he is” Davidson stated.

The St Johnstone believes that the improvement in the team’s defending overall has led to some of St Johnstone’s best results this season.

“Defending his box really well”

“He’s defending his box really well. All three of them – Jamie, Liam (Gordon) and Jason (Kerr) – have been doing that. They have to continue that because it is one of the main reasons we have started to get results Davidson concluded.

McCart and the rest of the St Johnstone defence could well be tested on Sunday. They take on a Celtic team who seems to be in a run of good form.

However, the Saints can take confidence from the fact they held Celtic to a 1-1 draw earlier this season. A repeat of that battling performance will be what Davidson is looking for.
