Rangers stand between St Johnstone and another trip to the national stadium – but manager Callum Davidson says his side can do it ‘the hard way.’

Steven Davis’ acrobatic strike and a Jonjoe Kenny own goal means Rangers will host St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals after beating Celtic 2-0 at Ibrox. Saints coasted past League One Clyde 2-0 thanks to goals from Guy Melamed and Michael O’Halloran as Davidson’s team won their fourth round tie.

Davidson was pleased once again with the defensive solidity from his side as he looks forward to the Rangers clash: “Without a doubt we’ll have to do it the hard way. It’s a one-off game but we’re back in the quarter-finals of a major competition which is another great achievement. We’ll look forward to the next round.

“It’s a job well done. I thought in the first half we were very good. I actually really enjoyed the performance. For me, we probably should have scored a couple more goals to take the game away from Clyde. From the turn of the year, we’ve hardly conceded any goals. We’ve been quite ruthless at the back.

“We’ve not conceded many chances, so it’s pleasing. It’s a good habit to get into and that all starts from the front. They all work extremely hard. I’m delighted to have booked our place in the quarter-finals. All season I’ve asked for that kind of performance, especially in these kind of games, and they’ve given me it.

“I thought in the last 10, 15 minutes we probably came off it a bit, allowed them to come back into the game. We were sloppy in certain things. I don’t want to be overly critical, but for me we should have been a couple of goals up.”
