League Two side Stenhousemuir have fired back at pundit Chris Sutton after he took a cheap pop at the Warriors while discussing Manchester United’s search for a new manager.

Sutton branded United’s search for a new boss “embarrassing” as he likened it to the way Stenny recruit players by taking them on trial.

“Why would they say they are searching for another interim?” Sutton said.

“Why wouldn’t you just say you are searching for another manager? And if something pans out in a particular way, it pans out in a particular way.

“I just don’t understand. So they’re going to have another trialist in, that’s what Stenhousemuir do, in Scottish League Two.

“They get a trialist in and then if they pass the test then they give him a contract, that’s embarrassing!

“It’s amateur stuff. This is the self-proclaimed biggest club in the world and they don’t have a contingency plan.”

Stenny never wasted time in putting Sutton in his place though, highlighting the incredible work done by the club in the local community – delivering 10,356 meals, 11,532 lunches and supporting over 400 families in the area.

Stenhousemuir chairman Iain McMenemy confirmed he’d spoken directly to Sutton after the loud-mouth pundit contacted the Warriors, walking the retired former striker through their own “extensive recruitment process” as they put his gas at a peep, tweeting: It’s all good folks. Chris Sutton rang me earlier and we talked about it. It wasn’t meant as a go at Stenhousemuir and it gave me the opportunity to outline the extensive recruitment process we have for managerial appointments. Still friends & we move on”.
