Stephen Robinson set for new St Mirren deal despite astonishing weekend rant at team

It is fair to say Stephen Robinson has credit in the bank at St Mirren.

Two successive top six finishes is a brilliant achievement for the Buddies, especially given where they were before the Northern Irishman took over.

To go one better the second time and progress to fifth which at the same time booked European qualification was the cherry on top of the icing on the cake.

Amazingly, there were still some grumblings from fans during last season. And that could rear its head again as it hasn’t been plain sailing this campaign.

The Paisley men have now lost three in a row and it’s just one win in their last 11 games in all competitions since an opening day 3-0 victory over Hibs.

And the performance during a 4-0 thumping from Hearts at the weekend was as poor as they have been.

Robinson poised for new St Mirren contract

Nevertheless, Robinson is set to get a new deal, according to the Scottish Sun.

The report claims both parties are close to an agreement which would see the 49-year-old tied to the club until 2027. His current deal runs out at the end of next season.

St Mirren have been keen to get their boss to commit his future despite the on-field struggles they’ve been having, after his brilliant achievements in the two seasons prior.

Robinson has often been linked with other jobs in the Scottish Premiership and down in England.

Robinson’s St Mirren rant after Hearts defeat

It comes after the former Motherwell boss’ furious reaction to his players after their 4-0 loss to Hearts at Tynecastle.

He is prepared to take a degree of responsibility himself but also insisted the efforts from his charges were “unacceptable.”

“The performance level wasn’t acceptable at all,” he said afterwards. “Hearts didn’t need a new manager bounce. They didn’t need to play particularly well to beat us. We beat ourselves.

“For the first goal, we lost the ball and didn’t react. The second is a great goal but we ran into each other for the third then for the fourth, we we gave the ball away again.

“Ultimately, I put the team out and I’m to blame but some of the decision-making wasn’t acceptable.

“Senior players have made decisions that aren’t good enough and we need a response to that. Otherwise, this will be a long season. The players have been told in no uncertain terms that isn’t good enough.”
