Sunderland are said to be ready to hijack a deal for Clark Robertson, who looks on the verge of a return to Aberdeen (Daily Record).

The 27-year-old centre-back is out-of-contract at relegated English Championship club Rotherham United. He has been strongly linked with a return to Aberdeen but Sunderland could make a last-ditch effort to keep him south of the border for the 2021/22 season.

Currently battling for promotion to the English Championship via the League One play-offs, Sunderland could offer Robertson the chance to stay in the English Championship. But talks with Aberdeen appear to be at an advanced stage.

Robertson was meeting up with Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass this week or at the start of next week to take part in some training and have a look around facilities ahead of a summer move. Robertson started with his career at Pittodrie but left in 2015 for Blackpool, the defender leaving for Rotherham in 2018, where he has been since.
