Hibs are no strangers to a summer clearout.
In the transfer window just past, a grand total of 16 players moved on from Easter Road, a mixture of loans ending, people leaving permanently and others being shipped out on loan. The Hibees would have liked to have moved on more.
It was nothing new. Back in Janaury 2023, then manager Lee Johnson insisted he was “sick to death of the mediocrity” at the club after a 3-0 derby defeat to Hearts, and said he needed to shift some deadwood.
His quotes at the time were: “This is a wonderful club full of potential, with a great fanbase, good training base and a brilliant stadium and it deserves more. We need to make way better decisions all over the place because today showed exactly where we are.
“At 2-0 down we started playing, but you’ve got to have the mentality that you are the best player on the pitch at 0-0.
“We need outs. The outs are as important as the ins. Again the mediocrity we have have got – I’m just being honest now. I’m in a place where I have to come out swinging. I’m not disrespecting players, but decisions have not been good enough (on recruitment) and we need to be better.
“We can’t keep being average at best. For a club like this, it’s just not good enough. Everyone needs to tell themselves some home truths. It feels like a big club because of the media, the scrutiny, we are in Edinburgh, there’s two clubs in Edinburgh.”

17 Hibs players out of contract in summer 2025
Another clearout beckons for the Hibees with a massive 17 players out of contract next summer. The list features a mix of fringe men, youngsters and first-teamers.
There is obviously a good chance some of them will be kept on but a large chunk of them will likely leave as the large turnover at the club continues.
The players out of contract are: Murray Aiken, Luke Amos, Max Boruc, Martin Boyle (option for a further year), Rocky Bushiri, Chris Cadden, Jake Doyle-Hayes, Dwight Gayle, Junior Hoilett, Nohan Kenneh, Josh Landers, Jacob McIntyre, Reuben McAllister, Kyle McLelland, Harry McKirdy, Lewis Miller, Josh O’Connor.
Malky Mackay admits Hibs reset looms
Recently appointed sporting director Malky Mackay is targeting a move away from such regular turnover but admitted the club was looking at a “reset” next summer.
He previously said: “There is a real reset next summer. This summer there weren’t too many out of contract and obviously we’ve got to get players into the squad as well. There will still be room for another couple between now and the end of the transfer window because we have to strengthen the team.”
