Scotland have been pitted against Greece in the UEFA Nations League play-off round.

Steve Clarke’s side wrapped up their 2024/25 group stage campaign last week with crucial victories over Croatia at Hampden and then away to Poland.

John McGinn’s winner against the Croats gave Scotland massive hope of clinching second in the group having previously winning none of their first four games in League A Group 1.

Captain Andy Robertson then delivered a dramatic 2-1 victory over Poland on Monday to hand Scotland another three points, but it was only enough to finish third.

So with that, it qualified Scotland for the Nations League promotion/relegation play-offs where they would face a League B team who finished second in their group.

Scotland to face Greece in Nations League play-offs

And that was confirmed as Greece on Friday morning after the UEFA draw in Nyon, Switzerland.

The first leg of the tie has been scheduled for Thursday, March 20 and the deciding leg will be played three days later on Sunday, March 23.

Given Scotland were in League A, they will play away first before finishing the play-off encounter at Hampden.

What happens if Scotland win or lose?

As alluded to, this is a promotion or relegation play-off. If Scotland beat Greece over two legs, they will remain in League A for the next Nations League group stage in 2026/27.

If Clarke’s men lose, unfortunately it means relegation to League B. Here’s what the Scotland boss had to say after learning of our opponents.

He told the official SFA website: “Greece have shown in the Nations League campaign that they are a quality team. These will be really competitive games in March but ones we will look forward to ahead of our World Cup qualifying.”

“We had a strong ending to our Nations League campaign, with positive results against teams established at the top level.

“The challenge now will be to continue the momentum we built in the autumn into this play-off tie and our World Cup qualification campaign next year.”
