Why Kris Boyd is ‘still to be convinced’ by Aberdeen despite record-breaking run

Jimmy Thelin is already breaking records at Aberdeen as the new manager – but Kris Boyd insists he’s still ‘unconvinced’ by the Scottish Premiership side.

Thelin took over at Pittodrie at the start of the summer as the Dons sought growth and stability after years of turbulence with regards to the football management structure.

The Swede arrived from IF Elfsborg, where he enjoyed six successful seasons, and is now looking to replicate the rebuilding job he did there with Aberdeen.

And so far, he’s working wonders in the north east of Scotland. The Dons have won every single game under his stewardship so far, a run of nine games in total.

It’s the best ever start to a manager’s stint at Aberdeen and Thelin is now just three consecutive wins away from equalling Martin O’Neill’s 12-game winning start to his Celtic career in 2000.

Kris Boyd pours cold water on Aberdeen hype

Aberdeen, as a result of their imperious form, currently sit joint-top of the Premiership and as such, talk has surfaced with regards to whether they can split the Old Firm this season.

That conjecture feels rather premature at this point in the campaign, but the Pittodrie side have made the best possible start to achieving that feat.

But Kris Boyd suggests that won’t happen and actually went as far as saying that he’s still to be convinced by Thelin’s side this season.

The former striker argues that Aberdeen have had an easy ride so far and are yet to come up against the toughest opposition in Scotland.

Boyd told Sky Sports: “I’m purely saying this based on the start the other teams have made as I’m not getting carried away with Aberdeen. They’ve had a good start but they are yet to face any really tough opponents.

“They have a run of fixtures that will be difficult for them. Having lost someone like Bojan Miovski, I can’t see them keeping this form for long.

“They do have a points gap on the rest but they will be dragged back into it. I am still to be convinced by them.”

Chris Sutton chimes in on Aberdeen

Chris Sutton – Boyd’s colleague at Sky Sports – was also on hand to give his opinion on Aberdeen for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

The 51-year-old stated: “Jimmy Thelin has brought in one or two players he knows well which will really help.

“They’ve been a topsy-turvy team in the last few seasons where they’ve had patches where they’re done really well, then the wheels came off.

“They seem to have taken their time in appointing Jimmy Thelin and he’s a builder of clubs.

“He built Elfsborg and it took him three years to get them to a really decent level and he’ll be hoping to do the same with Aberdeen who are a big club, but they’re striving for consistency.

“I think splitting the Old Firm isn’t going to happen, it’s a great start for him but let’s not get too carried away just yet.”
