Midfielder Stuart Bannigan thinks that Partick Thistle can shock Celtic in the League Cup tonight.
The Jags head to Parkhead tonight for a League Cup quarter-final. A win would not only secure one of the biggest cup shocks in Scottish football in recent years, but a trip to Hampden also.
Whilst they are big underdogs, Bannigan knows Celtic can’t win every cup game, so he thinks Partick have the potential to pull off a major upset.
He told the Partick Thistle website: “It’s a cup game, you always have a chance but we know the task at hand, they are unbeaten in these cups for a long time and have been extremely consistent but for us it’s a free shot to go out there and show what we can do.
“No one expects us to do anything, we have to use that to our advantage.
“They can’t keep winning forever so, why not us?”
Partick have nothing to lose against Celtic
Even the most optimistic Jags fan would struggle to tell you with a straight face that they’ll emerge victorious against the Hoops.
With a new manager bounce in their step perhaps after the appointment of Ian McCall, Bannigan and his teammates know this is a free opportunity to impress the boss.
Fellow Championship side Dunfermline showed in the last 16 of this competition that Celtic aren’t untouchable. The Pars took the holders all the way to extra time and were unlucky not to progress.
They managed to do that with a spirited and positive performance. Similarly, Partick have nothing to lose here, so they should go all out for an unlikely positive outcome.
Bannigan at least seems optimistic ahead of the daunting tie.
