The youngster has impressed at Chelsea, breaking through into the first-team under Frank Lampard last season. But the game has changed now, with Lampard sacked and Thomas Tuchel now in charge.
His immediate impression last season with 11 appearances and impressive displays this term in cup competitions look to have not been enough to convince the new Chelsea boss that he deserves a place in regular senior plans.
Tuchel left Gilmour out of his squad during his first game in charge, a 0-0 draw away to Wolves. The German is looking to give the experience of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho the chance to impress.
Gilmour is still highly-valued at Chelsea but is now eager to play regular senior football after battling back from a torn meniscus in 2020, which kept him out of action from July to November.
Euro 2020 is also on the horizon this summer and Gilmour wants those senior minutes to come now in order to boost his chances of making his Scotland breakthrough in time for the big event in June.
It is thought that Premier League sides and promotion-pushing Championship outfits will all be alerted to Gilmour’s availability on a temporary basis.
