Scott McTominay has received words of encouragement from Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of a massive week for Scotland.
The midfielder has only featured once in the Premier League for the Red Devils so far this season. The United boss challenged his fringe players prior to their meeting with Brighton in the Carabao Cup to make a claim for a starting berth against Tottenham this weekend.
McTominay did just that, impressing in midfield and scoring a pinpoint header as Manchester United progressed to the quarter-final stage of the competition.
It comes just a week before Scotland contest a massive Euro 2020 play-off semi-final. Steve Clarke’s side take on Israel for a place in a play-off final match which could wrap up Scotland’s return to a major tournament for the first time since 1998.
Manchester United’s Scotsman will almost definitely play some sort of role, either in the three at the back defence or midfield. Prior to the weekend’s games though, he won the admiration of Solskjaer.
“You want to go through in the cups, of course, but the players get a chance to get match minutes and impress,” he said.
“If you play well and perform… I thought the two in midfield, Scotty and Fred, were a shield in front of the back four as well and they were fantastic.
“I have got a couple of challenges, or headaches, or good decisions to make.”
