Southampton striker Che Adams says his call-up to the Scotland national team has ‘come at the right time.’

The forward represented England at youth level but has now pledged his allegiances to Scotland ahead of three opening World Cup 2022 qualifiers against Austria, Israel and Faroe Islands this week. Adams has scored seven Premier League goals with four assists for Southampton this season.

Some have questioned Adams’ motives. The striker rejected a call from Scotland in 2017, still only 20, but has now committed to the cause ahead of the nation’s return to tournament football at Euro 2020 this summer. David Marshall’s save against Serbia to secure this berth sold the Southampton striker on navy blue.

He said (Scotland NT): “It has come at the right time. A lot of people will be saying it is because of the Euros and stuff but I don’t think that is the case. I have held talks with the gaffer and Stu Armstrong and they have recommended it highly.

“I just want to be a part of it. I just feel it has come at the right time. I was younger back then. I didn’t really know my body and how I would adapt but I now feel I am at the right age. I saw the David Marshall video online.

“As soon as I saw that I wanted to be a part of it. The lads have been great and I can’t wait to get going and to put my trust into the manager. As a player you want to feel comfortable and the boys have certainly made me feel that.

“I know Stuart Armstrong from club level. He has helped me to settle in and I can’t wait to get going. I have spoken to him a couple of times and I spoke to the gaffer as well and that helped me make up my mind.”
