Scotland could be set for a major blow as players from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea face ending their international careers if their clubs enter the European Super League.

The English Premier League’s top six, including Scottish players at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, have announced plans to join a breakaway league alongside La Liga’s Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid and Serie A’s AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

There were rumours that FIFA and UEFA would not recognise this league, which is essentially a closed-shop for football’s biggest clubs. Now UEFA president Alex Ceferin has confirmed players who represent Super League clubs will not be allowed to play international football again until they leave these outfits.

This could impact Scotland stars in Arsenal man Kieran Tierney, Billy Gilmour of Chelsea, Scots captain and Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson plus Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Ceferin said: “I cannot express more strongly that the football world are united against the disgraceful self-serving proposals purely fueled by greed. It is a nonsense project. The players that will play in the Super League will be banned from playing in the World Cup and Euros. Ceferin. They will not be allowed play for their national teams.”
