Some of Scotland’s biggest players could be left with a huge decision on their hands as Chelsea and Manchester United join those pushing for a European Super League (BBC).

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham are involved in the breakaway league plans alongside La Liga’s Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid plus Serie A’s AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus.

There have been talks of this concept for years but as Champions League competition moves for reform from 2024, the big clubs have stated their intentions to go it alone. Chelsea, Manchester United and all involved have been widely criticised for their decision by UK government and fans.

It could have a severe impact on the Scotland National Team. World governing body FIFA says it would not recognise the Super League, meaning players representing the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United couldn’t play at a World Cup. UEFA have reiterated this stance which would prevent players playing at the Euros.

Scotland have several players involved at these clubs. Billy Gilmour, Scott McTominay, Scotland captain Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney all play for a big six club and will have Scotland futures to consider, should the Super League fully come into play.

It would be a huge blow for Scotland’s national team but it remains to be seen whether or not players are opposed to plans their clubs have signed up to. Scotland’s squad for Euro 2020 must be submitted by June 1st ahead of kick-off with Czech Republic on June 14th.
