Scott Arfield’s move to Bolton Wanderers hasn’t worked out and he could be Scotland-bound.
After quitting Rangers for Charlotte FC in 2023, the midfielder lasted just a year Stateside as he cut short his spell in MLS to head to England’s League One, citing a desire for a return to the competitiveness of Scottish football.
Arfield signed a one-year deal with Wanderers last summer but has not played much of late for the promotion play-off chasers.
The 36-year-old has 12 League One appearances, just three of which were starts, and the last came on Boxing Day.
Since then, he hasn’t even made the matchday squad on several occasions and when he has, he hasn’t made it onto the pitch.
And he could be set to cut short his Bolton misery by returning to Scotland.

Falkirk and unnamed club in battle for Arfield
Falkirk was where it all started for Arfield and an emotional return has often been mooted, the player himself admitting he would love it to happen one day.
The stars could all be aligning now as the Bairns are one of the clubs in talks over a deal to sign him, reports the Bolton News.
The other is also based in Scotland but is, as yet, unnamed.
John McGlynn’s side are looking to be promoted to the Premiership, dropping to second place in the Championship at the weekend but still holding a game in hand on Ayr United.
Signing Arfield could certainly boost that and helping them return to the Premiership would be a dream for the player.
What Arfield said about a Falkirk return
Back in 2023, Arfield told the Scottish Sun: I loved it (at Falkirk) and they gave me the chance to live my dream.
“I hope one day, in a playing or managerial capacity, to go back to the club. They gave me a chance as a youngster and I won’t forget that.
“They had no money, so they had to promote youngsters.
“I wish some other teams would go down a similar path. There are a lot of good players in the Scottish game, but they need a chance.”
