Scotland star expecting tough test against Ukraine tomorrow night

Scotland international Caroline Weir is looking forward to tomorrow night’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine at Hampden but knows they’ll be in for a tough test after coming up against Ukraine coach Lluis Cortes last season when her club side Manchester City faced Cortes’ FC Barcelona in the Champions League.

City lost out 4-2 to the Catalans, who went on to lift the trophy with a 4-0 win over Chelsea in the final before Cortes’ surprise resignation, and Weir expects him to have the Ukranians “well drilled” for tomorrow’s game.

When Scotland and Ukraine last met, the Weir-skippered Scots came out 3-0 winners thanks to a Martha Thomas double and Claire Emslie’s goal and Weir still holds fond memories of the win at the Pinatar Cup.

“He’s a top coach,” Weir confessed “We had a tough time against Barca last season.

“Ukraine are going to be well organised and players are always wanting to impress a new coach. He definitely knows football and the women’s game so he’ll have his team well drilled and it’s going to be tough.

“Obviously being captain for the first time was a hugely proud moment,” the Manchester City midfielder added. “It was in March before the Covid thing started. I’ve got fond memories of it and we won the game as well.”

A repeat of that win would put Scotland in pole position to claim second place in Group B in World Cup qualfying, behind Spain, and secure a playoff place – although the group is far from over.

Scotland and Spain currently sit level on points with three wins from three so far in qualifying – with the pair meeting in Seville on Tuesday for the first time in the campaign.
