David Hopkin says Ayr United have ‘four massive games’ after a 3-0 home defeat to Dundee in the Scottish Championship.
Max Anderson, Jonathan Afolabi and Paul McGowan goals leave Ayr United one point above the relegation play-off spot and manager Hopkin says huge matches await his side, Dunfermline to come next on Saturday.
He said: “The goals we gave away are embarrassing. Tom [Walsh] had a free shot at goal in the second half and if he takes that on you’re 1-0 up. They then go up the other end and score…it’s just really poor. I’ve told the players I can’t fault their effort or workrate but we just can’t seem to defend basic things and that’s what is killing us at the moment.
“Dundee didn’t create anything – it all came from our mistakes. We have four games left and I need players to stand up and be counted now. It’s the first time since I’ve been here that I’ve heard the players speaking and having a go at each other in the dressing room, which is a good sign.
“But we need more. We’ve come in during a difficult time and we’re trying to guide the team away from where they shouldn’t be. But even if you’re not playing at your best in games you should take a point and finish at 0-0. That’s why I’m frustrated and the players are as well but we have four massive games now and we have to go again.”
