Motherwell manager Graham Alexander says Declan Gallagher is out-of-contract in the summer amid links to the likes of Celtic.

The club captain and Scotland international has been a key player since arriving at Fir Park in 2019, becoming captain this season. But with his contract coming to an end, clubs down south plus Aberdeen, Celtic and Dundee United have all been linked with a move.

It was reported that Gallagher may have activated a one-year extension clause based on appearances, but Alexander says his captain’s contract expires in the summer: “He’s under contract until the summer then we take it from there.

“That’s what it is. There was something at the start of the season that I wasn’t aware of but when I came in, it was about keeping him until the summer. That hasn’t changed but he is out-of-contract in the summer. I don’t think that’s a secret.

“He’s free to play – as he has done the last two games – without that changing his future. When the time is right, if he wants to have a conversation with us, we are open to doing that. But when I last spoke to him about this, it was very much up in the air.

“We asked that if he was to be here after January, how committed would he be, and he’s been fully committed. When we get to the summer we will see how that progresses. I am an optimist but a I’m a realist. I know he will have suitors and if he had no suitors I would be wondering why we would be one. Other suitors are fully expected.”
