Kilmarnock manager Tommy Wright has provided an update on Kyle Lafferty after the striker missed Monday night’s Scottish Cup quarter-final match with St Mirren.

The Rugby Park club were painfully eliminated 5-4 on penalties after a pulsating 3-3 draw after extra-time. Lafferty – who has scored 10 goals in eight matches since joining Kilmarnock in February – arrived at the match wearing protection around his ankle.

Ahead of crucial Scottish Premiership matches as the Ayrshire side look to secure their league safety, Wright said of Lafferty: “We’ll assess him tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday. Hopefully he’ll be fit for Saturday. It’s an ankle injury. Saturday, I’ll be delighted if he’s there for it. But I think definitely the last two, but he’s got a chance for Saturday because it has settled down quickly.”

Wright was unhappy with referee Don Robertson, who pointed to the spot twice before penalty kicks. Brandon Haunstrup went down in the box under a challenge from St Mirren’s Kyle McAllister who was adamant he got a touch of the ball while Kilmarnock goalkeeper Colin Doyle was deemed to have brought Jake Doyle-Hayes to the floor in the other area.

That spot-kick just a few minutes from extra-time sent it to penalties where Kilmarnock were eliminated, Wright saying: “Let’s be honest, Don Robertson put it into penalties with a poor decision. When he is man enough he will own up to it. I will go and see him after the game. Over the years I have been in to see Don more than any other ref.

“Don Robertson changed the whole game. We could have dealt with the situation better, Millen could possibly just put his foot through it. But it is not a penalty all day long. But Don wanted to have the final say and he got it. It is extremely disappointing because there is no doubt we were the better team.”
