Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland started his league campaign in emphatic fashion, netting four against Inverness CT.

He inspired the Tangerines’ 4-1 victory, turning in one of the best performances of his career to date.

With his performance, Shankland sent out a big statement to the rest of the Championship.

Shankland could win the Championship for Dundee United

After his goalscoring exploits for Ayr United last season, it was a shock to many that Shankland opted for another season in the Championship.

Robbie Neilson won’t be caring one bit though. Shankland proved against Inverness that he is a Premiership player in the second tier and that he could win the title for United.

His first was a typical poacher’s goal, a strike from about six yards out. His second was similar, another ball came into the box and Shankland was on hand to guide it into the net with his head.

Another header was scored shortly after the restart, securing a hat-trick of headers for the forward. Shankland’s fourth was a real touch of class though. He spun away from the defence and slotted it home from just inside the 18 yard box.

With service, Shankland will romp to the top of the goalscoring charts again this year. His accuracy in front of goal is frightening.

Neilson has that extra spark that he didn’t have last term. With Shankland up front, you have to consider the Tangerines as favourites to win the Championship title.

Shankland has sent an ominous message to the rest of the league with his first United start. He looks set for another stellar goalscoring term.
