Aberdeen chief insistent on Jimmy Thelin as he’s quizzed on interest in boss

Aberdeen have no fears over the short-term future of Jimmy Thelin.

The Swede only arrived at Pittodrie in June and brought with him an air of positivity as they embarked on a remarkable start of 13 wins from his first 13 games before drawing with champions Celtic.

After then losing to the Hoops in the Premier Sports Cup final, the Dons kept their unbeaten run in the Premiership going until the last few weeks when the wheels have fallen off somewhat.

But they are still heavy favourites to finish third after building up a big lead on the rest of the teams.

There were some reports from down south that Thelin was being looked at by Wolves and there would certainly be a concern of that type of form leading to interest.

Thelin is committed to Aberdeen

Aberdeen CEO Alan Burrows was quizzed on any fears surrounding the manager at last night’s AGM and put them to bed.

He insists the Swede has committed to the clubs and Burrows is confident that remains the case.

The Dons chief accepts that long-term success will lead to other teams taking a look, but he is not losing any sleep in the short to medium term.

He told gathered shareholders: “My only focus is working with Jimmy on the long term at Aberdeen Football Club, of that there is no doubt.

“I think Jimmy has given a commitment to Aberdeen. I think you can take some comfort from how his relationship was with his previous clubs, where I think he’s seen it as a project that he committed to over a period of time, so I don’t have concerns about that.

“I don’t sit awake at night worrying if other clubs would be interested in our manager. In fact, if clubs are interested in your manager, it’s a compliment.

“Our entire focus right now is on continuing to get good results in the short term, continuing to plan for the January window and the summer window with Jimmy in charge.

“I’m not naive, I also know that if a manager continues to do well, then of course he’ll (attract) interest at some point in the future, but I hope that can be in a significant period of time.

“In the short and medium term, we are very much looking forward to Jimmy being at the helm at Aberdeen and hopefully driving us and achieving the aims and objectives that we set out when he took on the role as Aberdeen manager.”

Thelin is ‘perfect’ Aberdeen manager

It is a similar outlook to the one taken by Aberdeen hero Brian Irvine in an exclusive interview with Not the Old Firm.

Addressing interest in the Swede, he said: “You just have to live with that, I think.

“I don’t think it’s something that’s going to happen overnight, he’s signed a three-year contract so I don’t think he’ll just go away.

“I think Aberdeen fans are worrying and thinking ‘we’re doing so well so someone will come in and take him’. After five months in the job that realistically won’t happen.

“And if we get into next season, I’m sure he wants to build on what he’s started here and there’s a long way to go, to become a regular in Europe for example.

“And to try and do well in the league at the same time which we didn’t manage last season. So there’s lots of things he wants to improve further than what he has already.

“I don’t think it’ll happen immediately andd in the meantime he’s got loads of things he wants to achieve.

“So we hopefully won’t have to worry about losing the manager within his first season, he’s signed a three-year contract after all.”
