Aberdeen have confirmed that their goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Mitov has been a standout performer for the Dons this season under Jimmy Thelin and had played every minute of Premiership action up until Sunday against Hearts.

Aberdeen earned a point at Tynecastle but it came at the expense of an injury to Bulgarian stopper Mitov, who had to depart the field of play in the first-half.

Now a couple of days later, the full extent of Mitov’s injury has been made known by Aberdeen after he went for a scan on his hamstring.

Dimitar Mitov out for ‘up to six weeks’

Mitov will miss the busy festive period for Aberdeen and will be sidelined until the middle of January.

Aberdeen released a short statement on Tuesday which read: “We can today provide the following update on Dimitar Mitov.

“A scan has revealed the goalkeeper has suffered a hamstring injury that will keep him out for up to six weeks. We wish Dimi a speedy recovery.”

Thelin addressed Mitov’s injury ahead of the Celtic clash on Wednesday night. The Aberdeen boss said: “That’s football sometimes – players get injured.

“Of course, you want everyone always to be available, but it happens. Dimi has been really good, he’s a really good goalkeeper.

“We have a squad, so you have to find solutions and stay positive. Now you have to think about the player, to support him.

“It’s always difficult for players when these things happen, but we will support him on his journey back. Dimi is a positive guy, we have a good medical team here, so he will be supported.”

Who replaces Mitov for Aberdeen?

Ross Doohan will have to deputise for Mitov after he was the man to replace the former St Johnstone star at half-time on Sunday.

Doohan could play the next eight or nine games for the Dons across December and the start of January, a crucial period if the Dons are to stay within touching distance of Celtic.
