Aberdeen scouts have been scouring the market for players who could join Jimmy Thelin’s revolution in January.

The Swede has Aberdeen sitting second in the Premiership as they head into a hectic December schedule.

They are just four points behind Celtic and could spark a title charge back to life again with victory over them on Wednesday night at Pittodrie.

Regardless of the result, fans are getting more and more curious about the business Aberdeen could do in the January transfer window to give themselves the best chance of finishing in the top two come May.

And according to one report, the club have been scouting for players in one position in particular.

Aberdeen ‘looking at defensive options’

The Daily Record’s Scott Burns has revealed that Aberdeen’s scouting team ‘have been out looking at defensive options in recent weeks.’

With that, it is likely Thelin will sign a defender or two to reinforce what he already has at his disposal.

Aberdeen are certainly not short of cash after bringing in around £6.8m for striker Bojan Miovski in the summer window.

So it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Dons splash some of that cash on defensive cover.

What defensive positions could Aberdeen target?

Nicky Devlin has started every single competitive game for Aberdeen this season with no real back-up behind him.

Jack Milne is able to play there but it’s not his preferred position, so a right-back could be high on the priority list for Thelin in January.

Aberdeen are well-stocked at left-back with Jack MacKenzie and James McGarry, although both players’ futures are not exactly certain.

MacKenzie is out of contract in the summer and there’s been speculation three EFL Championship clubs are interested in signing him.

While 26-year-old McGarry has hardly kicked a ball in the Premiership this season, his first appearance coming as a substitute against Hearts on Sunday.

Central defensive options at the moment include Gavin Molloy, Slobodan Rubezic and Angus MacDonald. An injury in this position without reinforcing in January could be a problem so Thelin may look to strengthen here too.
