Aberdeen sliding doors moment that cost them vs Hibs as star named biggest difference maker

Shayden Morris has been used as a sub way more than he has started for Aberdeen this season.

But the winger has been identified as arguably one of their most important players.

Morris has been in the starting XI three times in the Premiership and come on as a sub ten times.

But he has been so impactful, providing a goal and three assists from those sub appearances as well as one further assist when starting.

Jimmy Thelin has a knack for making telling substitutions and the 22-year-old has often been the player to come on and make a difference.

That was certainly the case last night during the crazy 3-3 draw with Hibs.

Shayden Morris Aberdeen impact hailed

Morris replaced teammate Topi Keskinen early in the second half with the Hibees leading 1-0.

He was then involved in setting up Jamie McGrath’s equaliser, getting to the byline and flashing in a cross that was eventually tucked away by the Irishman.

The game went to 2-2 with Nicky Devlin edging the Dons ahead before Nicky Cadden’s blockbuster free-kick to level it up again.

Morris then took on his full-back again before flighting in a brilliant cross from which Ester Sokler produced a spectacular overhead kick.

Hibs would level it up again but that doesn’t take away from Morris’ impact.

And speaking post-match, Aberdeen legend Willie Miller said on BBC Sportsound: “Shayden Morris, where has this came from? I mean, he was a player that looked like he was going nowhere for Aberdeen.

“He wasn’t anywhere near the form of this season. Whenever he gets it you just know he’s going to go past the full-back or whoever he is up against.

“And you know where he’s going to go, he’s going to go the byline. But they can do nothing about it. And the delivery into the box was quite incredible.

“His impact has been unbelievable coming off the bench this season. The pace he’s got and the directness he’s shown, he didn’t have that last season.

“He’s always had the pace but not been that direct. I think there has been some leadership from Jimmy Thelin and the advice is ‘when you get that ball and get stood up, you go to that byline’.

“And that’s all he does. It’s dead simple and it’s so effective. He throws him on just after half-time with that instruction.

“The defence have been very good, maybe not tonight, but Morris for me has made such a difference to the Aberdeen team and he’s turned games that were going to be draws or defeats into victories.”

Nicky Devlin injury cost Aberdeen

Aberdeen have defended well this season but seemed to fall apart to let Hibs back in during what was a crazy six-minute stoppage time with three goals scored.

Devlin had picked up an injury and had to go off on 83 minutes as his side led 2-1, replaced by Jack Milne.

Michael Stewart reckons that may have been a turning point with the Dons struggling to cope with his absence.

He explained: “I think Nicky Devlin going off has probably, in that last moment, cost them.

“Because I think his experience would have just plugged the gap, recognised the danger.”
