Aberdeen star declares they’re ‘better’ than St Mirren and details what Jimmy Thelin said post-match

Jimmy Thelin has already given his level-headed public response to Aberdeen’s first Premiership defeat.

The Dons’ unbeaten start to the season came crashing to a halt at the weekend as they lost on the road to St Mirren, a venue that have generally struggled to get results at over recent years.

It was a deserved win for the Buddies as the performance of Thelin’s side fell short of where it has been to have had them level with Celtic at the top.

They now trail the league leaders by two points but will look to not allow that gap to get any bigger by getting back on track when they face Hibs tomorrow night.

What Thelin told Aberdeen players

Jimmy Thelin was keen not to give a knee-jerk reaction to Aberdeen’s defeat to St Mirren and was keeping everything in perspective.

But he struggled to put his finger on why the team didn’t start the game so well.

Midfielder Sivert Nilsen, signed by the Swede in the summer, has now detailed what the manager said to the players post-match.

And it was a very similar message to the one portrayed publicly.

Nilsen said: “He sees the big picture so that’s something he takes over to the group as well, that we are focusing on the right things.

“The emotions don’t control us, so that’s a very important thing now. It helps a lot, for sure, that you know the manager is a good one and one I’ve learned a lot from. And I felt like I wanted to learn more from him.

“Also, I know in my head he’s a guy who gets good results because he’s a smart man and that’s a journey I want to be a part of. It’s a big part of why I came. He’s a very demanding manager and he has high standards.

Aberdeen are ‘better’ than St Mirren

Despite the Dons’ loss to St Mirren, Nilsen insists they are the better team of the two.

He acknowledged the Buddies’ capabilities but is adamant it is a fixture he and his teammates should be taking all three points from.

“We are really disappointed to not win,” the Norwegian added. “St Mirren are a very good team but I still think that they are a team we are better than and we should beat. But it’s more about the performance we need to look at.”
