Former Scotland international Billy Dodds has praised Kieran Tierney after the Arsenal full-back’s display against Israel on Sunday.

The match itself was bittersweet for Scotland, drawing 1-1 at the Bloomfield Stadium. Ryan Fraser’s second-half goal gained a point for Scotland and Arsenal star Tierney’s display caught the eye.

It was an otherwise disappointing night for Scotland, dropping points in World Cup qualification to the fourth seed in the group. Austria are two points ahead of Steve Clarke’s side in second while the Scots sit four points off leaders Denmark ahead of Wednesday’s match with Faroe Islands.

While Dodds thinks Scotland are now chasing the pack on the road to World Cup 2022, he though Tierney was ‘outstanding.’ The left-back played centre-back in two different formations on Sunday.

Dodds said (BBC): “Kieran Tierney can play left-centre-back. People say things about him playing there but he was outstanding.  I feel it’s an opportunity missed. If we had got a winner, it would have been a huge three points. We are up against it.

“We are on the chase. I think we have given Israel too much respect. We are on catch-up. I fancy us to take care of Faroe Islands on Wednesday and we would have been seven points out of nine.”
