Dundee United are preparing to cash in on teenage defender Kerr Smith as Celtic join the race for his signature (Sun).

The centre-back is said to have been watched by every English Premier League squad in the last 12 months. He made his senior breakthrough at United under Micky Mellon last season and has featured sporadically with new head coach Thomas Courts this term. Now Celtic are keen.

It is likely that the board at the Scottish Premiership club will move Kerr on before the end of the transfer window. Celtic will need to move quickly if they want to sign Smith.

He is regarded as one of Scottish football’s brightest talents, hence the amount of English interest in him.

Courts’ side have won two of their opening three Premiership games this season, winning consecutive games against Rangers and St Johnstone 1-0.
