David Gray answers Hibs sack question and shares what was ‘unacceptable’ about St Mirren defeat

David Gray is still searching for that Hibs result that could ease the pressure on him.

The Hibees are now seven games without a win after yesterday’s 2-1 home defeat to St Mirren and remain bottom of the Premiership.

Pressure is always going to pile upon the manager of a club the size of the Easter Road men that finds itself in that position.

Hibs fans are disillusioned right now and that manifested in an angry confrontation with Elie Youan yesterday.

Gray not worrying about Hibs sack

The rookie boss is well aware of the situation.

Having been around the club for a while and seen several managers losing their job, he knows what the outcome tends to be if the results are not coming.

That’s generally the way of it in football but especially at a club with big expectations.

But he insists he is not scared for his future and intends to keep going about his work with the intention and belief that he can turn things round.

Gray said: “I don’t think worried or scared is the right way I feel about it.

“I fully understand the noise and rightly so, justifiably so, because of the situation we’re in, where this club is at the moment.

“We’ve talked a lot about it being a new squad and I could come up with 101 excuses, but where we find ourselves isn’t good enough.

“One thing I do know is until someone tells me differently, I’m going to try as hard as I can.  I will continue to work as hard as I possibly can because no one’s more frustrated than me.

“I also know what’s in the group and what we can be.”

Gray brands Hibs first half display ‘unacceptable’

The Hibees found themselves 2-0 down in the first half to a Connor McMenamin double, with some home fans leaving at that point and those that stuck around aiming their ire towards board members in the directors’ box.

Gray’s side managed to improve after the break and got one back through a Nicky Cadden penalty. The same player thought he’d equalised late on but it was ruled out for an offside.

But the manager says the first 45 minutes was well below where it needed to be.

He said: “The first half performance today was completely unacceptable from our point of view. We were miles off it.

“It was not just one player. There were a lot of players shying away from the ball, making mistakes, not taking the ball, and then making individual errors again, a lot of things that we’ve talked about previously.

“But also the lack of fight and belief, probably, in the first half was missing for me.

“St Mirren played as if they were a team that wanted to win the game, whereas we’re a team that need the points.

“And that was definitely my frustration at half-time, which is why I obviously made a few changes to try and get back into the game.

“I thought in the second half we had a bit more of a go, but it’s very hard to draw on any positives today when you see the scoreline and the situation we find ourselves in in the first half performance.

“It’s the first time I’ve come out and apologised to the fans, which I’ll do now again

“As much as we’ve been where we are in the league, there’s always been a few positives to draw on.

“But I think it’s very hard to draw on any today because of the situation we find ourselves in.

“And I think that’s probably the bit that angers me the most, probably because of the situation we find ourselves in.”
