David Gray delivers Hibs penalty verdict vs Rangers as he reacts to ‘outstanding’ fightback

David Gray can’t see why there can be any debate over Hibs’ penalty against Rangers at Easter Road.

The Hibees fought back brilliantly to earn a 3-3 draw with Rangers in a crazy game that was littered with poor defending and individual errors.

There was also moments of quality, however, and a flashpoint that had Rangers manager Philippe Clement raging at full-time.

Hibs were 2-1 down at the time when they were awarded a penalty for Ianis Hagi’s clumsy challenge on Josh Campbell.

The excellent Martin Boyle dispatched the spot-kick as Hibs fought back from the brink to eventually earn a good point.

Hibs boss Gray reacts to penalty decision

Asked about the penalty incident by Sky Sports, Gray was unperturbed.

He said: “I think the defender’s wrong side. He (Campbell) gets to the ball and gets in front of him (Hagi). If you’re the wrong side, you always run the risk.

“So it’s a clear penalty for me. Pretty simple from my point of view.”

Gray on Hibs’ second-half comeback

On his side’s spirited fightback, Gray was full of pride and said the point they gained was deserved, especially for the second-half display.

He said: “I think that’s clear for everyone to see. The second-half performance was outstanding in terms of the effort and desire from everyone involved right to the very end.

“To come from 2-0 down back to 2-2 to then create the best chances in the game at that point, we hit the post and then Gayley’s chance.

“Then to get pegged back again, so to show that desire and character to come back which I thought we deserved for our second-half performance.

“I thought the game could have very easily run away from us given the way we started. But we showed real character in the second-half and we got what we deserved at least.”
