David Gray gives Hibs future update on two fringe men and it doesn’t look good for one

Hibs are expected to have a clearout of players in the summer and perhaps even January.

The Hibees have as many as 17 men out of contract in 2025 and sporting director Malky Mackay has essentially admitted there will be another big squad turnover during the summer transfer window.

There are a lot of fringe men, like Harry McKirdy and Nohan Kenneh, who aren’t getting a sniff and taking up wages and space in the squad.

Those two, among others, are likely to move on be it next month or into the summer.

David Gray is likely to want to strengthen his squad in January and so could move players on to free up funds.

Jake Doyle-Hayes stays in David Gray’s Hibs plans

Jake Doyle-Hayes is someone who Hibs fans have not seen a lot of recently.

The midfielder has made one seven-minute appearance in the league this season and that came against Hearts after a long spell out injured.

Since then there have been some matchdays where he he hasn’t made the bench.

But Gray has now revealed the Irishman has had some undisclosed private issues which are now behind him and he remains in the plans going forward.

The Hibs boss said: “Jake’s had a little issue in his personal life a few weeks ago, which is going to remain private for obvious reasons, but he’s absolutely fine.

“He missed maybe a week or so of training but was back on the bench on Tuesday and at the weekend.

“He’s very much part of my plans and my thought process moving forward. He’s training every day at the moment, which has been good because he has had a tough time with injuries, a bit in and out.

“But he’s consistently training now, which is great. He definitely needs more game time to get him up to speed and hopefully that can come for him sooner rather than later.”

Not looking as good for Luke Amos

Luke Amos has a similar amount of minutes under his belt this season but hasn’t been seen in a matchday squad since August. The midfielder did have an injury issue but having recovered is still missing out.

Gray admits it is going to be difficult for the Englishman to force his way back in. The former QPR man signed on a free last year.

Gray added: “He did pick up an injury, he picked up a problem with his calf, which has niggled at him for a wee while. He is over that now though and he’s back in training and has been for a week or so.

“I’m also in a position where this is not just a slight on Luke, but there is a lot of competition for places and a lot of players on the training pitch every day, which is good because then you get competition.

“You get a lot of competition for places, it drives the standard in training. But I can only select 20 players on the matchday squad and that position is where there’s a lot of competition for places.”
