Zander Clark has surprised Hearts fans by signing a new contract at the club.
The goalkeeper was due to see his deal expire in the summer and many had expected him to move on after finding himself as the club’s number two for much of this season after Craig Gordon had forced his way back in.
Clark initially came in from St Johnstone as the Jambos legend’s back-up but when Gordon suffered a nasty double leg break the younger goalie took his chance with some impressive performances.
So when the 42-year-old returned, it was his turn to remain patient and try to push his Tynecastle and Scotland colleague all the way.
The veteran forced his way back in earlier this season and returned to his spot as number one for club and country.
The goalkeeping situation has been a debate among fans all season, with Gordon obviously in the twilight of his career and some debating whether it would be better to concentrate on keeping Clark happy by giving him games.
To complicate matters, both were due to come to the end of their contracts at the end of the season.
Manager Neil Critchley made his feelings clear to Hearts chiefs as he discussed the possibility of keeping both shotstoppers.
Gordon’s own future was up in the air and it was claimed he was 50/50 on whether to continue at the club or potentially move on or retire.

Clark signs new Hearts contract
In a shock story, Hibs were actually credited with an interest in Clark as they compiled a list of out-of-contract keepers to target for next season.
Hibees boss David Gray discussed that link but, either way, it was felt the 32-year-old’s Hearts spell may be coming to an end.
So today’s news that he has penned a new two-year deal to keep him at Hearts came as a surprise.
Manager Neil Critchley told the Hearts website: “It’s fantastic news that Zander has committed his future to the club.
“It can be challenging for a goalkeeper when they’re not playing but Zander trains at 100% every day, he’s supportive to his teammates and he’s a big part of our plans going forward.
“To have three top class goalkeepers competing with each other is a good thing for the club and I’m delighted to get the opportunity to continue working with him beyond the end of this season.”
Hearts fans react to Clark news
One said: “So surprised by this but in a good way, good bit of business to get him on a new deal.”
Another wrote: “Great news, now play him.”
This fan said: “Absolutely brilliant news. Well done to the club for getting this sorted.”
Another said: “At least he’s not going to Hibs any time soon.”
While this one theorised that Clark must have been promised first team football going forward.
They wrote: “Surely he’s been promised first team football next year to sign that. Can’t imagine he’s wanting to spend another one or two years sitting on the bench depending on how long Craigy lasts.”
Another agreed: “Never expected this. Must have been told he will be number one next season.”
This one wrote: “Thought he was going to Hibs though?”
Another added: “He turned the Hibees down.”
