Hearts thumped by Celtic after bright first half and woeful second – 3 things we learned

Hearts slumped to a 4-1 defeat as Celtic made them pay for early missed chances.

The Jambos would have been encouraged by the first 45 minutes as they created the better of the opportunities and would have felt confident of at least a point.

But the Hoops gave them a lesson in finishing by going three up through Kyogo, Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah.

Hearts got a late consolation through sub Musa Drammeh but at that point they had given themselves far too much to do.

As they continued to push for another they conceded a late penalty and Adam Idah tucked it away.

Repeat of Heidenheim and Rangers

Hearts were very good in the first half here and could easily have been in front. Like against Heidenheim in the Conference League and Rangers in the league, they created really good chances.

You just got that feeling there was going to be a repeat and they were going to regret that.

That’s how it turned out as Celtic gave them a clinic in being ruthless in front of goal, just like the Germans and, to an extent, Rangers.

It was shown in snapshot when Lawrence Shankland passed up a glorious chance to shoot, for Adam Idah to go up the other end and score the third.

Neil Critchley’s side have to find a way to get more reward for decent performances.

James Penrice brilliant first-half

James Penrice has already proven himself to be a really good signing, showing up well all season.

It was the same again here on an individual basis, especially in the first half.

He was constantly looking to attack up the left side and linked up really, really well with Blair Spittal.

And he created three really good chances for teammates in that opening 45, all which were passed up.

Lawrence Shankland frustrations

Shankland continues to be very far from his best and draw a blank in front of goal.

His confidence is absolutely shot in stark contrast to this time last year and indeed the last two seasons.

When he opted not to shoot at goal for that chance previously mentioned, some of the fans roundabout were on the feet screaming at the number nine and there even boos.

Harsh, you could say, but it sums up where things are at the moment.
