Hibs striker Christian Doidge has voiced his support for manager Paul Heckingbottom.

Some fans have been calling for his new manager to go following a disappointing start to the season. Although the club are in 11th right now, progression to the League Cup semi-final and a draw with Celtic have eased those shouts for now.

Doidge insists that ‘the gaffer’ has the full backing of his squad.

He told the Scottish Daily Mail (pullout, page nine, 30/09/19): “Everyone at the football club likes the gaffer. We like everything he’s doing.

‘He brought me to the club and I think he’s improving me as a player every day on the training pitch. It’s hard to see that, the fans protesting. But we’re a team. We all lose together.

“It was a bit harsh, him getting all the criticism when the whole team deserved it. But I’ve no doubt we’ll be successful under him.”

Saturday’s performance seemed to indicate the players are behind him

He put himself about and pressed the Celtic backline all day, making sure they didn’t get a minute to breathe. A goal of his own would’ve capped off a brilliant performance, but he can be proud of his efforts regardless.

Saturday’s match seems to back up Doidge’s comments. The Hibs players fought and battled for their boss, kicking any notion that they are a soft touch into the distance.

They ran themselves into the ground. It indicates that Heckingbottom still has the backing of his players, which will be a relief for the Englishman.

If Doidge manages to perform like he did on Saturday and adds goals to his game, he could become one of Heckingbottom’s big players this term.
