Hibs lose again as Dundee launch comeback against ten men – 3 things we learned

The misery continued for ten-man Hibs as they chucked away another lead to lose heavily at Dundee.

It was all looking rosy for the Hibees after just two minutes when Jordan Obita found Nicky Cadden in the box and the winger side-footed into the bottom corner.

But Obita was the sinner ten minutes later after his own bad touch forced him into a lunge on Mo Sylla, catching him on the ankle with his studs meaning it was always going to be a straight red card.

The game switched instantly and the Dee swarmed forward at every opportunity. By half-time they were 3-1 up.

Jordan McGhee was the scorer of the first, the defender showing good instincts in the box to level up.

An unfortunate own goal from Nectar Triantis made it two but the third was all Hibs’ doing. A poor touch from goalkeeper Josef Bursik allowed Seb Palmer-Houlden to pinch the ball from him and the loanee forward was able to bundle it home.

The second half was less of an event as Dundee saw it through but another defensive disaster from the visitors allowed Curtis Main to make it four.

Hibs shoot themselves in the foot

Hibs’ season has been full of small moments of quality completely outweighed by bad decision making. This was that in a microcosm.

Nicky Cadden’s well-taken opener gave them a brilliant start when they really, really needed it.

But then Jordan Obita decided to steam into a challenge on Mo Sylla after taking a poor touch, and he caught the midfielder ankle with the studs. A straight red.

Dundee were soon swarming all over them with an extra man and pretty quickly got the two goals to take charge of the game.

But once again the defeat was a lot to do with Hibs’ own failings and the players have heaped more pressure on manager David Gray.

Hibs folding under adversity

Another criticism aimed Hibs’ way is that they don’t have the stomach for the fight. They certainly did nothing here to suggest that isn’t the case.

When Obita was ordered off, the Hibees had a lead and something to try and hang onto.

With ten men you can still be dogged and make it difficult for your opponent to break you down.

But Dundee almost instantly gained the upper hand and it was another occasion on which the Easter Road men folded under adversity.

Ruthless Dundee

Credit where it’s due, this wasn’t all about Hibs’ failings.

Dundee attacked them aggressively when they sniffed blood and were ruthless in front of goal to make sure they took advantage.

Tony Docherty’s side have had their share of criticism too but they’ve had some good results and now sit just outside the top six.

Also, only Celtic have score more first-half goals than them.
