James Wilson is the golden boy at Hearts right now.

The 17-year-old striker is a shining light in a miserable season for the Jambos with his five strikes making him joint top scorer at the club along with Blair Spittal.

Wilson looked to have handed Hearts a win over Ross County with a deadly double until his teammates robbed him of the glory by capitulating to concede two late goals.

He also had the chance for a hat-trick taken away from him when a penalty was given then taken away after a VAR check.

The talented teen recently signed a new Jambos deal keeping him at the club for an extra year, which was music to the ears of fans after interest from the Premier League.

And manager Neil Critchley went onto compare Wilson to Liverpool and Manchester United talents having worked as a youth coach down south in his early coaching days.

The goal poacher scored a priceless equaliser against Hibs earlier this season and after that game discussed his reasons for snubbing Man Utd and Aston Villa transfer interest.

Despite being man-of-the moment, there may be another youngster at Hearts even better than Wilson.

Finlay Pollock named as best Hearts youngster

Joe Savage was until recently the sporting director at Tynecastle with responsibilty for the academy as well as the women’s team and the men’s first-team.

Having departed, he is nonetheless delighted to see Wilson having such an impact after being one of those who made a concerted effort to get him to stay at the club.

But Savage thinks Finlay Pollock, currently on loan at Raith Rovers, may be even better.

He told William Hill’s The Warm-Up: “Macaulay Tait was a good one for us as well, and Finlay Pollock.

“If Finlay hadn’t had the injuries he’s had, he’s probably the best of them all, in my opinion.

“Because he’s strong, physical, aggressive. He’s 6ft1in, can run, play off both feet.”

How Hearts wooed James Wilson and family

Savage has also detailed the lengths Hearts went to to convince the highly-rated youngster his future lay with them.

He explained: “Myself, Robbie Neilson and Frankie McAvoy took him and his parents out for a meal in Falkirk. If rumours were to be believed, we were told your Man Uniteds, your Liverpools, your Man Citys, Celtic and Rangers [were interested].

“Our debate was, we know historically the pathway at Hearts hasn’t been good enough the last few years, and we want to show that . . . we have to show that there’s a pathway, a structure that’s being put in place.

“I wouldn’t say we promised him first team football, because you can’t ever promise a young player first team football, but we said to him 18’s, B-Team, First Team – that’s how we think this can work for you. You’re good enough to play for Hearts.

“I’m delighted for James Wilson because we worked so hard to get him to sign a new contract because he had so much interest in him. For him to do what he’s doing at 17 years of age is brilliant.”
