After a remarkable spell in Leith, McGinn made the switch from Edinburgh to Birmingham to join Championship side Villa.
He’s enjoyed great success since, earning promotion in his first season and now starring in the Premier League for Dean Smith’s side.
His move was extremely stressful by his own admission. He told BT Sport 2 (18:53, 08/11/19): “It was awful. The summer was extremely tough for me, especially as it was such an important time for Hibs.
“It was so tough. I was getting asked the questions and even I didn’t know what was going on. In my head at the time it was just focusing on Hibs.
“After the game against Motherwell Aston Villa made an offer. I was allowed to come down and have a look at the place and ever since then I’ve not looked back.
It could’ve been a different story for Aston Villa and McGinn
McGinn’s a loved player at Aston Villa now but it could’ve been so different for him if he had completed a move he had his heart ‘set on.’
Celtic were one team interested in him and by the sounds of it McGinn was very interested in moving according to this interview. It didn’t materialise though and now he’s a Premier League player.
Who knows what would’ve happened, for better or worse, had McGinn stayed in Scotland. We can only focus on the present though where McGinn is thriving in the EPL.
Villa’s midfield battler has made 11 Premier League appearance with three goals and two assists to his name so far. His stock is continually rising south of the border.
