Johnny Russell has been dubbed a ‘legend and an inspiration’ as he leaves Sporting Kansas City.
The Scotland international has been playing in the States for six years and during his time in MLS has only played for the one club.
A Dundee United hero, the 34-year-old was latterly the captain of the American side and all in all he racked up 232 appearances, 67 goals and 39 assists.
He is a fan favourite and a hero of the club after becoming their third highest all-time top scorer.
But Sporting have taken the decision not to renew his contract and are releasing the Scot along with seven other players.

Russell available on a free transfer after leaving Kansas City
Russell will now be available to sign for another club on a free transfer in the January transfer window.
That will certainly pique the attention of Dundee United fans where the forward was a sensation, scoring 46 goals in 120 appearances before winning a move to Derby County.
Four seasons in the English Championship followed before a lucrative move to MLS.
Russell has won two Western Conferences with Kansas City and their MVP on two occasions. He also won their offensive player of the year three times.
The Tangerines are unlikely to be only Scottish club to be on red alert with plenty others surely wondering if he can do them a job.
Clubs in England may also take a look after his stint down there with Derby.
Which Premiership clubs could be a fit for Russell?
Dundee United is the obvious one given the previous link. He would also fit into their system, able to play in a front two in a 3-5-2 or anywhere along the front in a 3-4-3.
However, Jim Goodwin recently hinted money could be a stretch for him in January and the 34-year-old was on a very good wage in the States.
The three clubs in Scotland with bigger budgets would be Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs.
On the face of it, the Dons are doing just fine but with Pape Gueye injured and Kevin Nisbet only on loan, could they look for more firepower?
The Edinburgh clubs are in need of some spark in their sides to move them away from the bottom of the table.
With the data-driven approach of the Jambos now, some would assume that a 34-year-old striker may not be on their list. But Brighton do also sign ‘here and now’ players, so don’t rule it out on that basis.
The Hibees have been short in attack in recent games with a mixture of injuries and suspensions, so they could be another options.
However, they do also have an attacker of a similar age in Junior Hoilett, so may look for younger.
