Jorge Grant quizzed on Hearts future as he makes stance clear

Jorge Grant has been in and out of the Hearts team pretty much since signing.

And the midfielder is yet to start a game under new manager Neil Critchley.

Grant has technical ability and has shown what he can do at times, while frustrating at others whether that be with his three red cards or just inconsistency in performance.

It has never felt that he is secure as a Hearts player as a result and has often been linked with moves back down to England while on the fringes at Tynecastle.

He was even told by previous boss Steven Naismith he could find a new club at the start of last season before forcing his way back into the plans.

Grant on new Hearts deal prospects

Grant is one of nine Hearts players who will be out of contract in the summer of 2025.

Not a regular in the side, it remains to be seen whether Critchley will want the 29-year-old to be part of his squad as he begins to put his own stamp in it.

And Grant revealed there have been no discussions around a new deal as of yet.

But he was clear on one thing – he very much wants to stay.

Asked the question, he said: “No, that’s not been discussed. I don’t think that will be discussed until the club’s ready to tell me whether they’re going to give me a new one or not,

“I’ve just got to keep working hard, try and get back in the team and prove that I’m good enough to be here. I’d like to stay. I really enjoy being here. My family’s here, so I would like to stay. But that’s not down to me. I need to prove myself on the pitch and improve and get in the team.

“Obviously, I haven’t started a game since he’s come in. He’s told me what he wants from me coming off the bench. So, I’ve just got to try and do that and then get in the team and push on from there.”

Critchley tried to sign Grant for Blackpool

Critchley has previously admitted he is a big fan of Hearts midfielder Beni Baningime and tried to take him to Blackpool when he was manager there.

And it turns out the former Everton kid is not the only one of the manager’s current squad that he has previously tried to sign.

Grant says there were talks before he made the move from Lincoln City to Peterborough, after Critchley had earned the Seagulls promotion to the Championsip.

He explained: “I actually spoke to him before I joined Peterborough when he was Blackpool manager. So, I knew him from before.

“That was when Blackpool got promoted to the Championship, but it just didn’t happen and I went to Peterborough in the end.

“He obviously tried to sign me before so, yes, it’s obviously a good thing and hopefully I can just get back in the team and improve.”
