The Scottish FA issued the next instalment of their KMI Panel Outcomes after last weekend’s round of Scottish Premiership games.

The KMI Panel has been put in place this season to pore over on-field decisions to determine whether they were correct or incorrect and whether VAR was right or wrong to intervene.

The latest list of decisions scrutinised threw up few controversies for sides outwith the Old Firm – but one incident from the clash between Hibs and Motherwell may have fans talking.

Hoilett strike vs Motherwell should’ve been chalked off

Motherwell opened the scoring in the second-half via a fantastic strike from Apostolos Stamatelopoulos on the 56-minute mark.

But just moments later, Hibs were ahead when Junior Hoilett robbed a dallying Stephen O’Donnell on the wing to rush through on goal and slot an effort into the corner of the net.

VAR had a look at the incident for a potential foul in the attacking phase of play to determine whether Hoilett had kicked O’Donnell’s foot when taking the ball off him.

On the day, VAR believed there was not enough to intervene and the on-field decision to award the goal was upheld.

Four out of the five KMI panellists analysing the incident believe VAR were correct not to intervene and potentially disallow the goal, but it has been noted one thought the goal should have been ruled out.

In the notes section, it read: “The panel discussed this decision at length with the majority (4:1) deeming the onfield decision correct.

“One panelist believed that the goal should not have stood. The majority (4:1) believed VAR was correct not to intervene.”

Decision against Motherwell irrelevant

Given how difficult it is to determine whether Hoilett makes any sort of contact on O’Donnell, the decision on the day was likely the correct one.

And regardless, Motherwell fans who do think it was a legitimate foul won’t be too fussed as their high-flying side secured three points in the end anyway.

The Steelmen now sit fourth in the Premiership thanks to the victory at Easter Road while the Hibees continue to languish nearer the bottom end of the table.

David Gray’s men are 10th with just one win from seven registered. Dundee United away is next on the calendar for them after the current international break.
