Mark Wilson delivers bleak Hibs relegation verdict as David Gray told he is ‘walking a tightrope’

Hibs may have slightly eased fears amongst their fans on Saturday when they beat Ross County at Easter Road.

But a lot about the 3-1 win left much to be desired, particularly the first-half performance that was littered with errors and poor decision-making.

Hibs are up to 9th in the Premiership after the much-needed victory over the Staggies but remain only two points above rivals Hearts who occupy bottom spot.

Individual mistakes and defensive errors have plagued Hibs’ season so far and pundit Mark Wilson thinks that could cost the club at the end of the season.

Wilson, speaking on Open Goal, believes Hibs could be in a relegation fight due to their issues at the back.

Wilson on Hibs relegation fears

Asked where Hibs could finish in the league come May, Wilson replied: “I said at the start of the season, if they keep defending the way they are, they will be down the bottom and relegation candidates.

“They just can’t sort out their backline, that’s the problem. They’ll always score goals but their two full-backs for me are erratic and let people inside them.

“Their two centre-halves – even last season to this season – you’ll always get a chance against them somehow, or there’ll be a calamity in there.

“How can you win games if you can’t trust your backline and the goalkeeper you’re changing every second or third game?”

Helpless Hibs boss David Gray defended

Moreover, Wilson thinks manager David Gray has his hands tied behind his back because his players are not delivering for him.

And because of that, the boss is on a slippery slope. Wilson went on to say: “I think they’ll be in trouble and I think he’s (Gray) walking a tightrope.

“I feel for him. I think David Gray’s obviously got a bit about him.

“I think he was a good captain but I think sometimes it doesn’t work when you go to the coaching staff of the previous regime into management.

“It’s the players and the individual errors unfortunately that is killing him, maybe not his tactics.”
