Ross County collapse against Hibs as Motherwell & Dundee United play out thriller – Premiership round-up

Hibs took advantage of Ross County’s collapse as they secured a much-needed 3-1 Premiership victory in Edinburgh to move up to 8th.

The Leith side started the match in the worst possible fashion as they went 1-0 down inside just three minutes of play.

County’s Elijah Campbell was the scorer after a corner was swung into the box – and there’s no doubt the goal was deserved.

The Easter Road side were absolutely woeful across the first-half, a sharp contrast to last weekend’s performance away to Celtic.

Ross County earned corner after corner and the Hibs marking on each occasion left a lot to be desired.

Somehow though, David Gray’s men found a completely undeserved equaliser right at the end of the first-half when Dwight Gayle netted his second goal of the season.

Hibs’ performance didn’t get too much better, but they were given not just one but two opportunities to take the lead from the penalty spot.

After a VAR check for a foul then an offside, the first spot-kick was given. But Nicky Cadden missed from 12 yards and the chance was squandered.

But just moments later, County needlessly gave away another penalty. And this time, it was dispatched by Elie Youan to put Hibs in front.

County’s defending was shocking at times and it allowed Hibs to grab a third and seal the win through Josh Campbell.

Motherwell 4-3 Dundee United

Apostolos Stamatelopoulos and Sam Dalby both scored twice as Motherwell edged out Dundee United in a seven-goal thriller.

The first-half was full of goals as Apostolos Stamatelopoulos helped himself to a brace before the interval.

Punters were just getting to their seats at Fir Park when the Aussie striker netted inside 60 seconds of play, but Dundee United equalised from the penalty spot five minutes later.

Sam Dalby – now the Premiership’s top scorer this season – converted from 12 yards after a VAR check deemed Louis Moult to have been fouled inside the area.

But Andy Halliday and Stamatelopoulos opened up a two-goal lead to give Motherwell a 3-1 half-time advantage.

This topsy-turvy game continued to entertain as the Terrors had the resolve to get back into the clash through a scrappy Dalby goal.

Their hopes of getting another equaliser, however, were dashed after 68 minutes when Motherwell substitute Tom Sparrow settled a few nerves as far as the home fans were concerned.

United hit back again to score a third through Kristijan Trapanovski’s header but it wasn’t enough on the day as they left Lanarkshire empty-handed.

St Johnstone 2-3 St Mirren

It was an incredible game in Perth as the battle of the Saints ended in a dramatic victory for St Mirren.

The Buddies were in control of the game across the first-half and made their dominance count through a lovely goal by Crystal Palace loanee Killian Phillips.

The visitors led at half-time but the in-form St Johnstone striker Makenzie Kirk responded to equalise – and the Perth Saints were in the ascendency.

Benjamin Kimpioka then put St Johnstone 2-1 up with around 10 minutes of normal time left – but plenty of drama was yet to come.

Young St Mirren substitute Evan Mooney equalised in the 88th minute before Stephen Robinson’s men were handed the chance from the spot to win the game.

St Johnstone fans went wild as Mark O’Hara’s penalty was saved but goalkeeper Joshua Rae was adjudged to have stepped off his line as the effort was hit.

So the spot-kick was retaken and it was Roland Idowu who stepped up instead of O’Hara to fire into the net and wrap up an unbelievable game.
