Michael Stewart has a ‘word of caution’ for Hibs hierarchy despite 7-game unbeaten run

Michael Stewart says the Hibs decision-makers can’t be complacent in the transfer window amid the club’s excellent run of form.

Hibs have seemingly transformed the fortunes of their season as boss David Gray has guided his team from relegation contenders to European prospectives.

Gray changed his formation in November and among other things, it has contributed to a run of form that sees Hibs unbeaten in seven Premiership games and just one defeat in 10.

However, whilst there is a feel-good factor back at Easter Road, Premier Sports pundit Michael Stewart says the club can’t forget about the fact they still need to strengthen this month.

Michael Stewart’s Hibs message to board

Hibs are yet to make a signing as we approach the midway point of the window, but incoming transfers are expected.

As exclusively revealed by Not The Old Firm, Hibs are eyeing a new goalkeeper, attacking midfielder and striker to beef up their resources for the second half of the campaign.

And Stewart reckons Hibs need to get deals over the line when they are in a position of strength in the Premiership.

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club, Stewart said of Hibs: “What they’ve done now is, they’ve put themselves in a position where they can actually recruit well rather than desperately because six weeks ago, it would have been a desperation window.

“Whereas now, they’ve bought themselves a bit of time and perhaps, they’ve given themselves an aspiration of ‘we might be able to get player X that we didn’t think we could get six weeks ago’.

“They’ve put themselves in a position where you can say to somebody, ‘we’re moving forwards, we’re progressing, we’re going to challenge for Europe’ – you can sell things a little bit better.

“One defeat since that Dundee game which was Celtic away, where they performed pretty well. There has been peaks and troughs amongst that as well, the Ross County game at home was on the cusp of being a disaster at half-time, they scored in injury time.

“So as much as things are progressing really well, I would have a word of caution with anybody in the hierarchy at the club that – and I’d imagine they’ll know that – things are still a little bit shaky.”

Johan Mjällby reiterates Hibs need for transfers

Fellow Premier Sports pundit Johan Mjällby is in the same school of thought as Stewart.

Hibs are still only five points ahead of the relegation play-off zone in the Premiership with city rivals Hearts currently occupying that dreaded 11th spot.

And the nature of that could means the Leith outfit are always just a few games away from getting dragged right back into the mire at the bottom.

Mjällby recognises Hibs have plenty of attacking talent in Martin Boyle and Dwight Gayle but the Swede also believes new faces are required, particularly in defence.

Mjällby said: “Michael says they are not out of it right now. If they have a poor run now in the next three or four games, they’re going to be in trouble again.

“But it’s great to see them back. They are unbeaten in seven with five games and two draws and they’ve still got Martin Boyle who is scoring goals again.

“Dwight Gayle is there, he likes scoring goals even if he’s getting on a wee bit. I agree with you guys, I think they need to have a good transfer window to steady the ship and to be strong defensively.”
