Michael Stewart has suggested Hibs have a reason to be aggrieved by the penalty that cost them three points against Dundee United on Sunday.
The Hibees led 1-0 for most of the game thanks to Liam Miller’s goal in the first-half at Easter Road and it looked like they were finally heading for their second three points of the season.
But in typical Hibs fashion, they blew it at the end. Mykola Kukharevych, already on a yellow card, was adjudged to have pulled a Dundee United jersey inside the box and the referee awarded a penalty.
Kukharevych was sent off and Sam Dalby converted from 12 yards to keep Hibs rooted at the foot of the Premiership table with just eight points.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 11 | 12 | 2 | 3 | 7 | 14 | 19 | -5 | 9 | |
| 12 | 11 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 10 | 16 | -6 | 8 |
However, Stewart thinks Hibs have an argument against the awarding of the penalty because he believes United players were also pulling jerseys inside the area.
Alan Hutton, also speaking on Premier Sports’ The Scottish Football Social Club, wasn’t too sure but Stewart was adamant and has sympathy for his old side.
At the same time though, Stewart also thinks it was daft of Kukharevych to give the officials an opportunity to look at the incident and give a spot-kick.
Michael Stewart’s view on Hibs conceding late penalty
Stewart: “When you look at that clip, there are Hibs jerseys being pulled as well.
Hutton: “But it’s the obvious ones (Kukharevych’s shirt pull).
Stewart: “I know, I know and that’s obviously why it has been given. But you’re also told not every shirt pull is going to constitute a penalty kick. So I do have a little bit of sympathy for Hibs there.
“But put all that to one side, don’t give the ref a chance, especially the way things are at the moment where you feel nothing’s going for you. That’s just full concentration and don’t make stupid mistakes.”
David Gray was fuming with penalty call
David Gray was once again left helpless on the touchline as his players continue to let him down with both shoddy defending and discipline issues.
But Gray stood up for his team and thought the officials were to blame this time. He told the BBC after the 1-1 draw: “Hugely frustrating.
“My biggest concern is the decision to award the penalty in the first place. The players didn’t deserve that. We were by far the better team. We deserved to win the game. It’s a decision that’s cost us the game. You can’t appeal a yellow card.
“It’s a second yellow for something that, in my opinion, is the wrong decision. The level of performance the players put in, they didn’t deserve it.”
