Michael Stewart sends ‘catalyst’ warning to Aberdeen as he makes Hibs comparison

Since the start of November, Aberdeen fans have been crying out for a win – it’s as simple as that.

Before Saturday’s Scottish Cup fourth round clash with Elgin City, it was a mammoth 12 games without a victory for the Dons after they lost to Rangers in midweek.

Jimmy Thelin has always remained calm and composed across the torturous run of form, but fans week by week were becoming increasingly restless and frustrated.

An away trip to Borough Briggs on Saturday could have been looked at in two ways – a great chance to secure a long-awaited win or the potential for the mood at Pittodrie to drop to depressingly low levels.

In the end, Aberdeen swept Elgin City aside and progressed into the fifth round to play Dunfermline Athletic.

Michael Stewart issues warning to Aberdeen

Premier Sports pundit Michael Stewart had his say on the 3-0 victory for the Dons and thinks a defeat would have been “dangerous” for Thelin.

Stewart believes the Elgin win needs to be used as the impetus to recover their toiling season. And if they don’t do that at home to St Mirren this weekend, the victory won’t bear any sort of significance.

Stewart said: “Look, if they were to come away from this game out of the cup on the back of the results they’ve had, that really would be entering dangerous territory, to be perfectly honest.

“Thankfully for Aberdeen and Jimmy Thelin, they didn’t. They got the job done, 3-0 and into the next round.

“And as much as this is a game you would be expecting them to win, it has to be used as what David Gray was talking about with the (Hibs) 3-3 game against Aberdeen, this has got to be used as a catalyst to get some positive results and turn things around.

“If it doesn’t and the weekend comes around and they don’t get three points for the first time in a long time, then it just feels like it is quickly forgotten about, a victory against Elgin in the cup.”

Can Aberdeen get back on track in Premiership?

Put simply, it’s going to be quite difficult. Aberdeen’s next six Premiership fixtures aren’t exactly the set of games needed to ease back into some good form.

As mentioned, it’s St Mirren at home on Saturday which actually does represent a decent chance at gaining three points.

The Buddies haven’t won in the league since Boxing Day and like Aberdeen, have slipped down the table a little bit.

The Dons then have a resurgent Hibs, a threatening Dundee, before facing Kilmarnock, Celtic and Dundee United as we get into March.

Three points against Kilmarnock could be argued as another realistic opportunity, but Derek McInnes’ men thumped the Dons 4-0 last time out in December so nothing is guaranteed.
