Motherwell have moved to bring in another goalkeeper – and it’s a transfer that will help the next generation flourish.
Towering stopper Aaron Chapman has arrived at Fir Park, signing a contract until the end of the season. Standing at 6ft 7in, the former Peterborough keeper comes in to provide competition to number one Trevor Carson.
Scott Fox was brought in to compete with the Northern Irish international but suffered an ACL injury that has ended his campaign at Fir Park prematurely. Youngster PJ Morrison has played second-choice since.
Chapman comes in to allow some young goalkeepers to depart the club on loan for vital experience. Young Motherwell keeper Matthew Connelly signed for League One Falkirk on a short-term loan deal on Wednesday.
Morrison could be the next to head out on loan as Robinson explains the reasoning behind Chapman’s arrival: “Aaron comes in to give us experienced cover and competition for Trevor.
“He has played a high number of games at a good level in England, so will prove a valuable addition. Importantly, this will also open the door for us to put PJ Morrison on loan. We want to do that so he can gain valuable experience at first team level and we hope to announce a move for him shortly.
“That is vitally important for all young players but especially goalkeepers, who have a limited opportunity.
“Without reserve games, the development of our young players would be affected if we did not take that step. Going out on loan is the perfect way to bridge the gap.”
