Scott Allan identifies Hibs ‘most important’ transfer need and source of ‘unrest’

Hibs will surely be looking to recruit new players in January as they aim to breathe new life into their season.

A fighting draw against Aberdeen in which they scored TWO stoppage time equalisers showed all is not lost for David Gray as his players showed a will to fight for him.

But the fact remains that one league victory all season is far from good enough for the Hibees and bottom of the Premiership is far from where they need or want to be.

Gray looked to fix issues from last season in the summer window by signing two centre-backs in Warren O’Hora and Marvin Ekpiteta and two goalkeepers, Jordan Smith and Josef Bursik.

But it looks like he will need to return to the market in the winter window with deficiencies still needing ironed out.

Scott Allan explains Hibs most important transfer need

In all honesty, Hibs could probably do with strengthening in most areas across the park.

Their strikers aren’t really scoring but they could also have better service from wide areas and midfield while defence remains an issue with seven goals conceded in the last two games.

But former Hibee Scott Allan feels it is between the sticks that is the biggest issue.

Josef Bursik was taken out the firing line after yet more errors against Dundee at the weekend but Jordan Smith didn’t fare much better against Aberdeen.

Speaking on the PLZ Soccer Football Show, Allan said: “I think long-term as the season goes on the goalkeeper is so crucial. They points could be all the difference.

“That’s two goalkeepers we’re talking about. It happened on Saturday, again last night.

“I think that could be probably the most important position that they need recruitment for in the January window.

“You know how important it is in terms of how your season looks. That’s maybe where the unrest in the back comes from because they just don’t feel that calmness.”

Hibs keepers a ‘real problem’

Former Easter Road striker Tam McManus agrees that his side now have a big issue with the number one position.

But he did slightly launch a defence of Smith, insisting he’s not convinced Ester Sokler’s overhead kick was one he should have saved.

He said: “I think he could maybe do better. He could have saved it. I think there’s a difference between ‘could have’ and ‘should have’. It’s a great save if he saves it. And he’s not been playing, he’s been out of the team.

“That’s a real problem for Hibs. I don’t know if there’s free agents out there or if they can recall someone like the lad Johnson at Airdrie.

“But there’s a real problem for Hibs at the back and in the goalkeeping department. They’re giving goals away. The one he came out and palmed it, just giving it away.”
