We may still have a chunk of this season to go, but the SPFL are already planning for the next campaign.

The Scottish Premiership is almost two-thirds of the way through as we approach the run-in with Aberdeen, Dundee United and Motherwell in the mix for third as it stands.

Hibs and even some other clubs may still be in with an outside shout too while plenty will still harbour ambitions of European placings.

In terms of relegation, St Johnstone are looking doomed and even manager Simo Valakari admitted it was a “big possibility” even before their latest defeat to Rangers.

Falkirk could take their place as they lead the Championship but Ayr United and Livingston are gunning for them, while the play-offs will offer them a fallback opportunity.

Whatever happens ahead of next season, the plans need to be in place and that is why the SPFL have released an update.

SPFL statement on season 2025/26

SPFL Chief Operating Officer Calum Beattie said: “We are only just into the second half of the season across the four divisions and there is so much to look forward to in the remaining months of season 2024/25.

“However, we are well aware that clubs and supporters need to plan ahead. We are therefore pleased to be able to confirm start and end dates for season 2025/26, as well as the full schedule for the Premier Sports Cup.

“We will again have five clubs competing in UEFA club competitions in season 2025/26 and, of course, we are all hoping that next season ends with Scotland’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.”
