There has been uproar around last night’s Madrid derby after Julián Alvarez saw his penalty disallowed in the shootout.
Atletico Madrid went on to lose the shootout and be knocked out of the Champions League in the cruelest possible manner at the hands of their biggest rivals, Real.
It has been claimed the Argentine striker touched the ball twice when taking his spot kick, although there doesn’t seem to be any conclusive proof that actually happened.
And it is a little-known rule that in that instance the penalty is not retaken. In normal action it would be given as a foul to the other team but in a shootout they just move onto the next kick with no goal given.
It has baffled fans, especially Atletico ones of course, and the club and manager Diego Simeone are furious. Of course double-touch is in the rules but the feeling is that there wasn’t one in this instance.
It doesn’t happen often but there are examples of penalties being disallowed for this. There’s also one of a spot kick being ALLOWED in the Scottish Premiership.
Bojan Miovski double-touch for Aberdeen vs St Mirren goes unpunished
You don’t have to go back that far to find it, August 2023 to be exact.
Bojan Miovski is now playing for Girona in La Liga after completing a £6.8million move (Sky Sports) from Aberdeen last summer.
Graeme Shinnie claimed nobody at Aberdeen even noticed the Macedonian had left because of how well they started the season with the likes of Pape Gueye finding the net with regularity.
Miovski struggled to score for Girona initially before finally getting off the mark with a double, but he hasn’t continued to ripple the net since either.
But back in 2023, everything he touched seemed to turn to gold as the Dons‘ star man. The 25-year-old hit 16 strikes in each of his Premiership seasons, putting him on the radar of many clubs.
In November, with Aberdeen trailing St Mirren by two goals to one, they were awarded a late penalty and it was their talisman who stepped forward.
Slipping when he went to strike, he appeared to hit the ball off his other foot before sending it past Zach Hemming. But after a VAR review, the goal was actually awarded.

It wouldn’t have been much of a comfort for St Mirren to learn days later that the goal was wrongly awarded.
The Scottish FA’s VAR Independent Review Panel (IRP) concluded that a mistake was made on the day (Daily Record).
At the time it was one of only three decisions claimed to be incorrect, along with a Josh Mulligan red card for Dundee and the same team’s disallowed goal against Livingston.
