Former Dundee United chief Mal Brannigan has joined his latest club, becoming chief executive at Wigan Athletic.
Phoenix 2021 Limited have taken over at Wigan following financial hardship at the League One club. The takeover has been headed by Bahrain businessman Tamal Mubarak Al-Hammad and Brannigan will be the club’s new chief executive.

A Wigan statement reads: “The club is delighted to announce that Phoenix 2021 Limited has today become the new owner of Wigan Athletic Football Club. Phoenix 2021 Limited has now completed all of the technical information required and received confirmation that all matters associated with membership of the EFL have been concluded.”
It follows a turbulent period for Wigan that had previous owner Au Yeung Wai Kay plunge the club into administration, forced to sell key assets like former Motherwell star Cedric Kipre for cut-price fees.
Brannigan will ‘oversee the Club’s day-to-day operations and work with the Club’s management team to drive Wigan Athletic forwards in a new era under new ownership.’ He left Dundee United at the end of last season.

The former Dundalk man was appointed Tannadice CEO in 2019 but left in May 2020 after Dundee United completed their return to the Scottish Premiership. He had day-to-day running of the club and presided over the significant spend on then-boss Robbie Neilson’s squad.
