Dundee United are looking to add to their squad from a position of strength in the January transfer window.

Jim Goodwin’s side sit 3rd in the Premiership after an impressive return to the top-flight and are favourites to cling onto that given Aberdeen and Motherwell’s recent troubles.

Hearts are way too far back now to pose a threat while Hibs have rejuvenated themselves but sit seven points behind the Terrors in 6th.

Goodwin is eyeing Europe for Dundee United next season and has been beefing up his squad this month to ensure they have the best chance of achieving that.

Ruari Paton and Lewis Fiorini joined on loan for the remainder of the campaign from Port Vale and Stockport County respectively, while it was confirmed striker Sam Dalby will not be recalled by Wrexham.

Now, United are said to be closing in on their third January signing and it’s a familiar name to Scottish football.

Dundee United want Luton Town’s Allan Campbell

The Courier are reporting that Dundee United are ‘pursuing’ a loan deal for Luton Town midfielder Allan Campbell.

Former Motherwell star Campbell is actually out on loan with Charlton Athletic at the moment, but the report states that the Addicks would be open to cancelling the loan contract.

The 26-year-old has struggled for game time at Charlton and is said to be open to a return to Scotland – potentially with Dundee United.

Advanced talks between Luton, Charlton and Dundee United will reportedly take place on Thursday as the clock ticks down towards Monday’s deadline.

Earlier in the window, there were reports of interest from Aberdeen and Hearts in Campbell. Not The Old Firm understands both clubs were at least taking a look.

But it appears United are in pole position to land Campbell, who as made 86 appearances for Luton and played 160 times for Motherwell.

Campbell was compared to N’Golo Kante

Luton Town signed Campbell from Motherwell in June 2021 just before his contract at Fir Park expired.

He went on to become a crucial figure in the club’s historic promotion to the Premier League the following year and with that, his nickname of the ‘Lanarkshire Kante’ bore more resemblance.

In an interview with Football Scotland in 2022, Campbell explained that former Motherwell CEO Alan Burrows gave him the tag.

N’Golo Kante was a star for Leicester City as they shocked the world after lifting the 2015/16 Premier League title.

He then went on to shine for Chelsea and won the Champions League with the Stamford Bridge giants in 2021.

Campbell said of the nickname: “He (Burrows) said it on Twitter and it caught on. It’s class to be called something like that. He’s one of the best midfielders in the world isn’t he?”
